Male factor sits in about half of UK fertility investigations. That is why GPs ask about heat and smoking, and why a semen analysis is a normal test β not a personality exam.
Sperm are made on a rolling cycle. The sample you produce today started weeks ago. Change the habits now and you are working on the next cohort. People usually talk about 70 to 90 days. Production itself is often quoted around 74 days, then a little extra time to mature.
If you could become pregnant, the NHS still wants 400 Β΅g folic acid daily plus vitamin D. There is no matching NHS programme for men. His first job is heat, smoking, alcohol, sleep and weight. Then, if you use a supplement, read the milligrams on the tub you actually buy.
What clinics actually measure
A semen analysis is not one number called βqualityβ. You will usually see:
- Count / concentration β how many sperm per millilitre, and often a total count. WHO reference ranges are a lab tool. Clinics often repeat an odd result.
- Motility β how they move, especially progressive (forward) motility.
- Morphology β shape. Strict criteria look harsh. One screenshot is not the whole story.
DNA fragmentation, hormones and imaging sit behind those three if a clinic has a reason to go further. If you have a report in hand, start with our explainer on semen analysis in the UK.
The ~74-day cycle (why 90 days keeps coming up)
New sperm are always being made. A full production cycle is a bit over two months, then extra time to appear in the ejaculate. That is why lifestyle advice and most male-nutrition studies talk about three months. You cannot do it overnight.
If you are working with a clinic, start habits now and recheck on their timetable. If you have been trying for 12 months β or 6 months if a partner is 36 or over β book a GP. Same if there is already a sperm issue, testicular surgery or hormone treatment in the history.
Lifestyle first
- Keep things cooler. Testicles work better a little below core temperature. Looser underwear. Skip regular saunas, hot tubs, and laptops on the lap.
- Stop smoking. One of the clearer links with sperm DNA damage. Treat vaping the same while you are trying.
- Go easy on alcohol. UK advice is no more than 14 units a week, spread out. Less is better while you are trying.
- Eat a Mediterranean-style plate. Vegetables, nuts, seeds, oily fish, wholegrains. Cut the ultra-processed stuff. Zinc-rich foods (meat, shellfish, seeds) and selenium-rich foods (Brazil nuts β donβt overdo them β eggs, fish) belong on the plate before they belong in a capsule.
- Sleep, walk, manage weight. A healthy weight, a walk most days and decent sleep support the hormones that run sperm production. Chronic stress does the opposite.
Nutrients that actually matter on a menβs label
Food first. A formula can fill gaps while those 90 days run.
- Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, and to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood.
- Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis β sperm being made.
The NIH selenium fact sheet is a useful overlay for that mineral. CoQ10 and acetyl L-carnitine show up in male-fertility research because sperm are energy-hungry cells. Ashwagandha is a stress and vitality botanical. Research has reported sperm-count improvements in men taking ashwagandha. Read milligrams on the pack in front of you, not a slogan on the lid.
How Him Fertility fits
Him Fertility is our daily preconception formula for men in that 90-day window. The live facts panel has zinc at 15 mg, selenium at 200 Β΅g, CoQ10 at 300 mg and acetyl L-carnitine at 250 mg, plus KSM-66 ashwagandha for the stress side of the same months. Zinc is in there for fertility, reproduction and testosterone maintenance. Selenium is in there for spermatogenesis.
If you are trying as a couple, the Him & Her Fertility bundle pairs it with Her Fertility so both of you start the same week. More on the cycle in how to work with a 90-day sperm window and ashwagandha for stress and vitality.
FAQ
How long until lifestyle or nutrition can show up on a sample?
Think in about 90 days. The sperm in todayβs sample were already well into production weeks ago.
What about ashwagandha and sperm count?
Research has reported sperm-count improvements in men taking ashwagandha. It sits in the stress and vitality column of a formula. See the ashwagandha piece.
Should he copy her prenatal?
No. Her public-health bar is folic acid and vitamin D. His label is usually zinc, selenium, and β if CoQ10 is in the mix β a dose that is not a token sprinkle.
